Februar 1939 in Chicago, Illinois, geboren, und starb am 20. Mai 2013 in Rosenheim (Deutschland), im Alter von 74 Jahren an den Folgen eines Gallengangskarzinoms. Nach seinem College-Abschluss 1960 beschloss Manzarek, an der University of California in Los Angeles zu studieren, wo er Jim Morrison am Venice Beach kennenlernte. Manzareks eindrucksvolles Spiel verschmolz Rock, Jazz, Blues, Bossa Nova und eine Reihe anderer Stile zu etwas völlig, schillernd Neuem. Der frühe Tod Morrisons ( 3. 7. 1971), dessen nähere Umstände nicht mit Sicherheit geklärt wurden, führte zur Auflösung der Originalbesetzung der Doors. Dennoch waren sie weiterhin in der Musikszene vertreten. Sie gelten als eine der wichtigsten und erfolgreichsten Band der Musikgeschichte. Der Einfluss ihres musikalischen Erbes ist heute stärker denn je.
